A Fresh Patatas Alinadas Salad Recipe for the Summer

(Patatas Aliñadas)

By Edu Valor / Author - Spanish Chef

There are several variations of the patatas alinadas salad recipe. This is my own version. The recipe mainly focuses on the potatoes and how you can enhance their flavor.

In the Cádiz version of the salad, you’ll see it made simply with spring onions, parsley, and seasonings.

Sometimes people add eggs and tuna, but in Cádiz, the salad is mostly just a potato salad.

I find this dish pairs especially well with seafood. It complements the freshness and acidity of the salad, making it perfect for the summer months.

To be honest, I've never had it as a main dish. It's always been a side dish to accompany roasted or fried meats or seafood.

As a bonus, it also makes an excellent appetizer or tapas dish.

Let's Make the Patatas Alinadas Salad Recipe !

  1. Rinse the potatoes. Pour enough water in a pot and add some salt. Set fire to high.
  2. When water starts to boil, add the potatoes and eggs. Lower fire to medium. Boil eggs for 12 minutes, potatoes 20 minutes or so. Pierce a potato with a small knife. When potato slides off it's done.
  3. Finely cut the parsley, and spring onions in rings. The peppers in short strips.
  4. Peel the potatoes and eggs and cut them in 2,5cm/1 inch pieces or somewhat smaller.
  5. Put all cut ingredients in a bowl. Disperse the tuna over it. Mix olive oil with the vinegar and sprinkle over the bowl.
  6. Add salt and pepper to taste and gently combine everything with a spatula. Taste and season again if necessary. The salad should be slightly acidic.

TIPS:

  • Pierce a potato with small knife to know if it's done.
  • Add a little more vinegar if you like.
  • Replace spring onions with red or sweet onion if you need to.
  • Keep in refrigerator before serving.
  • Patatas aliñadas are excellent with seafood.

To prepare the patatas alinadas salad, you need to boil the potatoes with the peel on for about 20 minutes. That’s how it’s traditionally done.

What do I recommend serving with this salad? My personal favorite is fried bluefish, like mackerel, paired with a dry white wine. It makes my mouth water—yum!
